Adult Role Models in Science (ARMS) Program

About the ARMS Program

ARMS is a partnership program managed by the UW–Madison Institute for Biology Education with the goal of enhancing science education in elementary and middle schools.

Component Programs

  • Engage Children in Science Course: A course and training opportunity for UW–Madison students and scientists to learn how to work effectively in science outreach with children.
  • After-School Science Clubs: The Institute for Biology Education, the City of Madison Office of Community Service and a variety of after school providers work together to offer After-School Science Clubs at area schools and community centers.
  • Classroom Volunteers and Mentors: ARMS volunteers help teachers lead inquiry-based science lessons in their classrooms and may also help mentor an individual or small group of students needing more attention or working on a group project.
  • Family Science Events: A variety of family science events, including family science nights/ days, science symposiums and science fairs, give students the chance to share their learning with parents, who then become " adult role models in science".
